The Joy of Slowing Down

Recently, I got a message from a former colleague who worked with me on social media and marketing for many years. One of the conversations we came back to again and again over the years was about the importance of owning your own content. Because when we share something on Instagram or Facebook, we are really just borrowing the space. We don’t control the algorithm, and we don’t get to decide how long our content will be seen. Something you have spent hours creating can disappear down a feed surprisingly quickly.

A blog is different. Here, the content lives with me. It can be found again. I can build on it, connect stories and projects, and create a little universe that doesn’t depend on what happens to work on Instagram this week. And that was actually why she wrote to me. There seems to be a small but growing return to blogging. More people are once again looking for a slightly more direct and personal way of communicating. Something that feels a little more analogue than videos on Instagram and quick posts on Facebook.

And that truly makes me happy, because blogging has always had a special place in my heart. I love taking photographs. I love communicating and sharing what I know. And perhaps most of all, I love telling stories. I love being able to take a project and unfold it a little more than you can in a short caption or a reel. There have been periods when I simply haven’t had the energy for it. A blog takes time and space to go deeper, and those are things I haven’t always had much of in recent years. But I can feel the desire to blogging is back.

I think it has a lot to do with finding some of my creative energy again. I want to start little projects simply because they feel fun, exciting and inspiring. Not necessarily big, ambitious plans. Just projects that make me want to create.

One of them is my new YouTube series, where I have started looking back at my 13 years as a sewing pattern designer and sharing the stories behind my patterns, my work and How To Do Fashion.

This is exactly the kinds of projects that give me energy right now. Projects where I can tell stories and share the knowledge I have gathered through my work, while also giving myself room to be creative in more than one way.

And that is how I want to use this blog from now on. Not as something that has to be published on certain days or squeezed into a fixed content plan. But as a place where there is room for longer thoughts. A place where I don’t have to worry about catching your attention within three seconds.

Because, quite frankly, I find that a little exhausting sometimes.

I want there to be time here. Time for the photographs. For the process. For going deep into the details. And for the stories behind the things I make. A place where things are allowed to take a little longer. And perhaps live a little longer too.

I certainly hope there will be much more of that here in the future.
